Worth knowing

  • Backcountry is marked prohibited because the page says pets are only permitted on paved surfaces; the page does not use the word backcountry.
  • The restrictions also apply to pets that are carried.
  • Pet owners not following the regulations may be cited (minimum fine is $75).
  • Pets may be left in vehicles while owners hike, but idling and generator use are not permitted in park parking lots.
  • The page points dog owners to nearby Red Canyon, managed by the U.S. Forest Service, for dog-friendly trails.
  • The Bark Ranger sign-up steps are: ask at the Visitor Center front desk, read and agree to the Bark Ranger card, get a pet treat.

How we read the rules

Every statement on this page was taken from the park’s own pets page on nps.gov and the quoted sentences are re-checked against our saved copy of that page each time the site is built. Parks change pet rules for wildlife, heat and trail conditions, and superintendents can close areas at short notice, so treat the park’s pets page and the ranger at the entrance as the final word. Service animals are covered by different rules. Compare all 63 parks.
