About these dates

“Typically opens” and “closes” are the park’s own phrasing, not our estimate. This year’s date is filled only when an official page states it as done; a scheduled date is labelled as such. History tables come from the park or the state DOT and are parsed row by row — a row we cannot show in the source does not appear. Current status on the day you drive is on the park’s road-conditions page and, for Washington passes, WSDOT.

FAQ

Seasonal road questions

When does Going-to-the-Sun Road open?
There is no set date. Over 90 recorded years the road opened over Logan Pass around Jun 13 on median — as early as May 16, 1987 (1987) and as late as Jul 15, 1933 (1933). In 2026 it opened Jun 22, 2026.
When does Tioga Pass open?
Yosemite's own table puts the median Tioga Road opening around May 24; the earliest on record is Apr 8, 1977 (1977) and the latest Jul 22, 2023 (2023). For 2026 the park announced May 15, 2026.
Why do these roads close at all?
Snow. High passes like Logan Pass (6,646 ft), Tioga Pass (9,943 ft) and Trail Ridge Road (12,183 ft) collect tens of feet of it, and plowing out takes weeks each spring. Fall closures come with the first storms that stick, so closing dates are rarely announced in advance.
Where do these dates come from?
From each park's own road-status pages and, for 11 roads, the official historical tables the park or state DOT publishes, captured on 2026-10-05. Every date and table row is re-checked against those captures when this site is built; we compute medians and extremes but never forecast.
