How this list is built

It's the National Park Service's own directory: every entry the NPS Data API returns, 474in all (we split Sequoia and Kings Canyon into their two national parks). The NPS's official count of National Park System units is 433; the directory also includes some affiliated areas, national trails and partnership sites that aren't counted as units. Each site links to its nps.gov page.

FAQ

NPS sites, answered

How many National Park Service sites are there?
The National Park Service counts 433 official units in the National Park System. Its public directory (the NPS Data API) lists 474 entries, because it also includes some affiliated areas, trails and partnership sites; this checklist uses that directory, with Sequoia and Kings Canyon as two national parks.
What's the difference between a national park and other NPS sites?
"National Park" is one designation among many. Only 63 places carry it; the other sites are national monuments (88 here), historic sites and historical parks (148), memorials, battlefields, seashores, recreation areas, trails and more.
Is this the same as the 63 national parks checklist?
No, it's a separate, bigger list. The 63 national parks appear here too, and ticking one on either page ticks it on both, but the other sites are saved separately, so your 63-park progress stays simple.
Can I collect passport stamps at these sites?
That's the Passport To Your National Parks® program, run by America's National Parks (Eastern National). Its free cancellation stamps are usually in visitor centers or park stores, and only designated NPS units are listed in the Passport books. Our passport stamps guide explains how it works.
