FAQ

Planning questions

When is the best time to visit the national parks?
Across all 63 parks, July is the busiest month and January the quietest, by NPS monthly visitor counts (2021–2025 average). Every park has its own rhythm, though: the crowd calendar shows each one month by month, and the month pages list the parks in their shoulder season.
Do I need a reservation to visit a national park in 2026?
Only at a handful. We checked every park's nps.gov page: Rocky Mountain, Acadia, Haleakalā, Carlsbad Caverns need a booking for park entry or a specific area this year, while Glacier, Yosemite, Arches dropped their timed-entry systems for 2026.
Is the America the Beautiful pass worth it?
For US residents it's $80 a year; with private-vehicle fees topping out at $35, 3 parks at that price pay for it. Visitors from abroad pay $250, which also waives the $100 nonresident fee at 11 parks. The pass calculator does the sum for your trip.
Which national parks are free to enter?
23 national park units charge no entrance fee at all, according to NPS fee data, including Great Smoky Mountains, the most visited park of 2025. On fee-free days, the rest are free for US citizens and residents too.
